It is important to me that those who have an experience in using services are able to contribute to making them better by sharing their experiences and providing suggestions. They are directly impacted by the care that is delivered. Their involvement should be highly encouraged as their experience can aid constructive pathways towards improvements as they are the only ones who will be able to share what their journey has been like for them. I am involved because I believe this approach should be integrated into various aspects of care and I will work to demonstrate the value this provides. This collaborative approach with professionals is what I believe will contribute to successful and long lasting positive change.

I joined VOICES after recovering from mental illness. I’ve experienced adverse childhood events, trauma, discrimination, isolation, vulnerability, addiction and homelessness. Despite progressive hearing loss and a neurodiverse condition, I sustained a project management career throughout my addiction and recovery. A decade into recovery, I changed careers to work in prisons, probation, homelessness, addiction and mental health services, progressing to a senior role. Engaging with clients and front-line workers, encouraging reflective practice, and promoting evidence-led, trauma-informed, personalised care through co-production has carried me through. VOICES gave me the chance to apply my lived experience to multi-agency collaboration that embodies trauma-informed principles.

I have had a passion for singing and music for as long as I can remember. Alongside that, I am dedicated to helping those in need or less fortunate. I have battled a non-specific eating disorder for 20 years and have been let down by a complex and strained system. There is a lack of knowledge about treatment for non-specific eating disorders within the NHS system. I joined the local area LERO to raise awareness about the lack of specialised treatment for individuals with eating disorders, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Overall, I want to be part of the voice for change.
